What Is Thermally Conductive Adhesive

Thermally conductive adhesives (TCAs) are specialized glues designed to bond surfaces while efficiently transferring heat. They combine bonding strength with thermal management—ideal for electronic components that generate heat.

Key Types of Thermally Conductive Adhesives

  • Epoxy-Based
    • Superior mechanical strength and high thermal conductivity.
    • Available in one-part (heat-cure) and two-part (mix-on-use) forms.
  • Silicone-Based
    • Flexible, electrically insulating, and capable of enduring thermal cycling.
    • Suitable for bonding dissimilar substrates.
  • Acrylic- or Polyurethane-Based
    • Cure quickly (especially acrylics) and are generally cost-effective.
    • May offer lower performance than epoxies.

Why Use Them?

  • Heat Dissipation + Bonding: They not only secure components, but also efficiently channel heat away from critical areas—replacing mechanical fasteners like screws.
  • Electrical Insulation: Many TCAs are formulated to avoid creating electrical short circuits—especially important in electronics.
  • Durability: Designed to resist thermal shock, vibration, and environmental stress—making them reliable in demanding applications.

Practical Uses

  • Electronics & Semiconductors: Bonding CPUs, GPUs, power modules, or power transistors to heat sinks or spreaders.
  • LEDs: Attaching LED chips to substrates/heatsinks to maintain efficient heat transfer.
  • Automotive & Industrial: Thermal management in battery modules, sensors, inverters, and other high-temperature systems.

First Seal India’s Offerings

First Seal, based in Ahmedabad, specializes in thermal management solutions including thermal grease, silicone sealants, and potting adhesives:

  • Thermal Grease: Available in conductivities from 1.0 to 4.0 W/m·K, suitable for heat sinks, LEDs, CPUs, power modules, and more.
  • Thermally Conductive Silicone Sealant: A paste-form adhesive that cures at normal temperature with good bonding and thermal performance.
